Some grains have been part of Indian food traditions for centuries, long before millets became a modern kitchen staple. Kodo Millet, known as Kodra in parts of North and Central India and Varagu in South India, is one such traditional grain. Small in size but full of character, Kodo Millet has a naturally nutty flavour, slightly earthy taste and a pleasantly firm texture when cooked.
For generations, traditional millets like Kodo have been grown in regions where farmers have adapted to diverse soils, limited water availability and challenging growing conditions. Their ability to grow in varied agro-climatic conditions has made millets an important part of India's traditional and sustainable food systems.
Just Organik Organic Kodo Millet brings this traditional Indian grain to your kitchen through responsible organic sourcing and careful processing. Naturally gluten-free and a source of dietary fibre, Kodo Millet is a simple way to add greater variety to the grains you eat every day.
One of the easiest things about Kodo Millet is how naturally it fits into Indian cooking. Cook it much like rice and serve it with dal, sambar, rasam, rajma or vegetable curry. Use it to prepare comforting Kodo Millet Khichdi, pulao, upma or Pongal, or try it in salads and grain bowls when you want something different from your regular rice.
Its versatility extends across regional Indian cooking too. Known by different names across the country, Kodo Millet has found its way into traditional recipes in both North and South India. Its firm grains hold their texture well after cooking, making it particularly suitable for dishes where you want the grain to remain distinct rather than turn soft and mushy.
From the traditional fields where millets have been cultivated for generations to the modern Indian kitchen looking for wholesome alternatives to everyday grains, Just Organik Organic Kodo Millet brings an old Indian grain into a new generation of meals.
For one person: Approximately 50–60 g of dry Kodo Millet is a practical serving for one person when used as the main grain in a meal. The quantity can vary depending on the recipe, appetite and what it is served with.
For everyday use: Rinse Kodo Millet well and soak it for around 20–30 minutes before cooking. Cook it with sufficient water until the grains become tender and fluffy. Serve it like rice with dal, sambar, curry, vegetables or other everyday Indian accompaniments.
